The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) paid a visit to the Finger Lakes region of New York and Watkins Glen International (WGI) over the weekend, for the second and final road course race of the season. Jamie McMurray, drove a damaged McDonald’s Chevy SS to a 40th place finish after starting in the top-20.

McMurray rolled off from the 17th starting position and had a fast McDonald’s Chevy, driving up to the top-10 before the first caution flag of the day. Crew chief Matt McCall managed strategy to put McMurray in positon to race among the leaders in the closing laps. Unfortunately, McMurray was involved in a chain reaction incident on a lap-51 restart. Contact with another car caused front-end damage to the race car that included a punctured radiator and oil cooler. The team was forced to the garage for repairs, and returned to action three laps down to the leaders. McMurray completed the race with a 40th-place result.

With his finish, McMurray dropped one position to ninth-place in the NSCS point standings.

NOTES OF INTEREST

· McMurray remains the highest seeded driver currently without a win in the Chase standings, with just four races left before the cutoff
· The Cheez-It 355 was slowed by caution five times for 16 laps

CGRFS Quote board:

Jamie McMurray – No. 1 McDonald’s Chevrolet SS: – “That was the fastest car that I have had at Watkins Glen in several years. It’s just an unfortunate incident that took us out of contention. I really didn’t even know that anyone checked-up in front of us. I just got into the car in front and it punctured the radiator and oil cooler. The guys did an amazing job of making the repairs and getting me back on track quickly. Our McDonald’s Chevy was really fast today, I wish we could have had a chance to be around at the end.”

NSCS teams will run the Pure Michigan 400 at Michigan International Speedway, Aug. 16. NBC Sports Network, Sirius XM NASCAR Channel 90 and MRN Radio will have live coverage at 2:30 p.m. EDT.
